HEADLINE: Four Afghan generals killed in helicopter crash
DATELINE: ISLAMABAD, Jan 5 0740 07:40 Eastern Time 010594
BODY:
Four Afghan generals allied with former Communist strongman Abdul Rashid Dostam were killed in a helicopter crash near northern Mazar-i-Sharif Tuesday, an Afghan embassy spokesman said Wednesday.
Moallim Zaher Shah, briefing reporters in the bordering Pakistani city of Peshawar, said those killed included general Abdul Momin, a senior military commander from northern Afghanistan, and General Hilal Uddin, who was in charge of the coup leader Dostam's airbase in Mazar-i-Sharif. The generals were returning from Hairatan river port to Mazar-i-Sharif, he said.
The diplomat did not give names of other officers but said they were close allies of Dostam who rebelled against President Burhanuddin Rabbani's government on New Year's day.
Shah said heavy fighting was still raging in Mazar-i-Sharif and government forces shot down two of the four aircraft which had flown from their northern Shibarghan base to bomb Kabul Tuesday.
