HEADLINE: General Killed in Airplane Crash
DATELINE: PHNOM PENH, Cambodia
BODY:
The deputy commander of Cambodia's air force was killed when a light reconnaissance
plane he was piloting clipped some trees and crashed in central Cambodia, the
government said Sunday.
Information Minister Ieng Mouly said Maj. Gen. Tes Chanthan was killed Saturday
while flying to provide security for Prime Minister Norodom Ranariddh, who was
attending a meeting in Kompong Thom Province, 85 miles north of Phnom Penh.
The aircraft exploded when it hit the ground, but a second person on board managed
to get out of the wreckage, the information minister said. He suffered serious
injuries.
The Cambodian air force is small and plays little role in the infantry war against
the Khmer Rouge.
