All 17 passengers and crew of a helicopter died when their craft crashed into a mountainside in Alemaya province, between Harer and Dire Dawa in eastern Ethiopia, on the morning of 7th February, Voice of Ethiopia (Addis Ababa) reported the next day. Among those killed were Maj-Gen Aleksandr Simonov, a Soviet military adviser;an unnamed Soviet translator; Gebreyes Welde Hana, member of the WPE Central Committee and first secretary of the East Harerge region; Maj-Gen Berhanu Jembere, commander of the First Revolutionary Army; and a number of military and government officials. The cause of the crash has not yet been established.
