HEADLINE: Seven Army Officers, Including General, Killed In Chopper Crash
DATELINE: SEOUL, South Korea
BODY:
A South Korean army UH-1 helicopter crashed on a rugged mountain in the countryside
today, killing a general and six other officers aboard, the Yonhap News Agency
reported.
The national news agency said two other officers and an enlisted man were also
injured in the midmorning crash 150 miles southeast of Seoul. There were no
reports of casualties on the ground.
The Defense Ministry confirmed the report but gave no details, including the
cause of the crash.
Among the dead was Lt. Gen. Lee Hyon-bu, commander of the 7th Army Corps deployed
on an eastern sector of the 150-mile-long Demilitarized Zone separating South
and North Korea, Yonhap said.
Yonhap said the American-made helicopter carrying the general and his aides
left Hongchun, a border city on eastern South Korea, and was en route to the
southeastern port city of Pohang when the accident occurred.
